Racial and sexual harassment have been
held to be unlawful direct
discrimination by the RRA and the SDA
even though neither are defined as
distinct offences under those Acts.
There is an increased awareness of the
issues revolved in racial and sexual
harassment and recent years have shown a
significant rise in complaints to
industrial tribunals. If the Complaint
is serious, industrial tribunals will
award high damages. Therefore, it is
crucial for employers to take steps to
prevent harassment occurring in their
work place. Where it does occur they
should deal with it appropriately.
